Choosing a Contractor Wisely

How do I determine if a company is right for me?

You will need to do some checking. Check out the contractors you are interested in via the internet. This is the fastest and easiest way to look at several resources (resource links are on this page).  See how long they have been in business and what kind of reputation they have.  Find out if  they have an office and not just a post office box. Find out if they are using cell phones only, or if they have an office phone number. Check with the BBB and Builders Association.  Also, always ask for references.

What are some warning signs that I need to look for when considering a  company?

  1.  They only accept cash.
  2.  They don't have a written contract.
  3.  They expect you to get the permits.
  4.  They want payment up front.
  5.  They have no business phone.
  6.  They don't have a contractor license.

Should I go with the contractor that has the lowest estimate?

Not always. All estimates should give thorough details of the materials, labor, warranty and pricing . These details need to be in writing and agreed upon prior to moving forward.  The prices between estimates should be comparable to each other. If there is one that is really high or really
low compared to the others, you might want to ask more questions.  Usually, the least expensive estimate is the one that gives the least details.
